Doug Hannon’s Wave Spin Reel won Field and Stream Magazine’s 2008 “Best of the Best” award in the March issue in which the editors said “Doug Hannons’s Wave Spin Reels are a radical design at a time when innovation in spinning is hard to find.
Selling for only $79.95, the DH3000 also was honored by Outdoor Life Magazine when editors wrote that the reel represents the first significant improvement in salt and freshwater spinning-reel design in more than 50 years. What sets the Wave-Spin apart from its competition is that it is virtually impossible for the line to “bird’s nest” during a cast.
In addition to the two previously discussed awards, TackleTour dot com presented the reel with its Innovation Award. They stated that in the world of bass fishing news this story is by far the biggest in the history of bass fishing. This new reel is so innovative that there is no room left for improvement because it completely solves the problem of line tangling.
The background story of this bass fishing news.
Some historians in bass fishing news refer to Doug Hannon as the “Thomas Edison of Bass Fishing”. He holds 16 patents in bass fishing related ideas that include a weedless propeller that revolutionized the trolling motor industry.
His latest invention, the Wave-Spin Reel, makes loops irrelevant with either monofilament or braided lines. Unlike the smooth lip on all other spinning reels, this reel features 16 smoothly rounded teeth and/or waves on the spool lip which completely eliminate the eruption of a bird’s nest due to a loop or loops that may have been retrieved onto the spool. During casting, looped line lies harmlessly between the waves of the spool and simply unwinds on the cast unnoticed and without creating tangles of any kind. Even if the loop lies on the spool instead of between the waves, the patented design still allows the line to cast freely.
This invention can change the future of bass fishing. When you read comments on bass fishing news forums you see so many beginning bass fisherman who are frustrated because of line tangling problems, Doug Hannons invention can be a great help for them.
