So if you haven’t ever seen a crappie, it is a small white panfish that has dark blue/green spots all over it. Sometimes referred to as “specks” these fish usually run anywhere from half a pound up to two pounds heavy. They are a schooling fish, but they have very small, and thin mouths. You’ll need to be careful once you find a school of them, because if you set the hook to hard, you’ll tear the hook right out of the crappie’s mouth.
Also, because of the fish’s small size, you will probably want to gear down in order to have a rig that will be sensitive to the crappie bite, and won’t yank the hook out of the crappie’s mouth. One other about crappie, they like good cover as do many other game fish.
So what kinds of crappie lures should you cast at this tasty panfish? Well, first and foremost, the beginner should invest in marabou jigs. These lures are very cheap, and come in a myriad of colors. Concentrate on the lighter color selection green, white, and yellow. If you are fishing particularly murky water, then you may want to get a few darker colored marabou jigs, perhaps in a black or dark orange. Those are the best jigs, but some other good ones are curly and rooster tail jigs. So go out there and get those crappie!
