Raising earthworms can be an entertaining hobby.  Worm byproducts can be used for a number of different things. You can decide to raise earthworms on a large scale in order to sell them or on a low scale just for your own purposes. One of the most popular reasons for raising earthworms is the fact that they are live, and affordable, fish food. There are proven benefits, and, best of all, you can have fun in the process.

If you have your own aquarium with a few fish I am sure you are very aware of how expensive fish food can be. Fish need protein in their food in order to be healthy. A good amount of protein in the diet can ensure your aquarium is healthy and happy for a long time. For this reason white worms are a great option when you want to begin raising worms.

White worms are quite high in protein and are actually less expensive to cultivate in your home than some other types. They can grow as large as 1 inch and are composed of approximately 80 percent protein. The huge amount of protein within them is great for stimulating your fish farm to breed. The large percentage of protein will also allow for your smaller fish to be healthier and grow faster.  As for the cost, you can usually start your own white worm harvest for about 5 or 10 dollars. This is much cheaper than most other options available when you are thinking of raising worms.

So now you may be wondering how to raise worms. You can start with something as simple as a plastic container that has a tight fitting lid.  Make a few holes in the air tight container with a sharp instrument so that air can pass through easily. Next, fill the container half way with soil and some peat moss. Place on top a piece of milk soaked bread. This piece of bread is the integral part if you want to be successful in raising worms.

The bread itself will mold and when it does you should remove the molded spots with a spoon or knife. Put your previously purchased worm culture into the container. After just 4 days, your worm culture will be fully established as it has grown substantially. Be sure to you wait 4 days before you remove any worms ,this ensures they have the chance to reproduce and become self sustained.

In just a few simple steps and a few short days you have gone about farming worms.
