Musky Fishing in The Fall: Use Giant Lures
Subscribe To Our FeedIf you are as serious about Musky fishing as I am, than you are probably chomping at the bit to hit the water this fall. I can’t stay focused at work, all I can think about is having a huge musky chasing one of my favorite large musky Bulldawgs lures.
It’s that time of year when the Muskies are putting on their feedbags in search of larger size baitfish. Doesn’t this makes sense. The water is cooling off, the baitfish are larger, and the Muskies have instinct telling them to eat in preparation for the long harsh winter season.
Muskies, like most game fish, don’t want to exert much valuable energy hunting small meals. Especially musky, which are normall very particular in their food choices, are only going to make their effort worth their time. Of course, an occasional fish can be caught on small offerings. I often go smallmouth bass fishing in the fall on rivers in northern regions that also contain musky. And of occasion, I’ll catch a musky on a pint sized offering. Are these fish hitting out of hunger or aggression? Or a combination of both? But I’ve noticed on all the accidental fall Muskies I’ve landed, they are typically smaller in size. On one trip I was casting a small Lucky Craft topwater lure and this 40″ musky blasted out of the water and took my lure with him. This happens often. However, if you are truly trying to land that magical 50″ behemoth, then you should maximize your odds by throwing some of your largest Musky lures you have.
One great place to buy musky lures is online. Especially stores that offer auctions to Ebay. Fisherman often sell their excess gear online. These websites offer new, used, cheap, and sometimes hard to find lures. Even vintage musky lure collectors can find great lures online.
