The larger the nwt number, the larger fish you can catch.

Be wary of rods (i.e. 7-9 nwt) that are rated for multiple net weights. When compared to single rated rods, these multi-rated rods can catch more types and weight classes of fish, but wouldn’t be as flexible.

Rods are made of fiberglass, graphite, or bamboo. Fiberglass rods are durable and less expensive. Fiberglass rods are best for beginning fly fishermen because they can be used in a variety of situations. Graphite rods are lighter and will give you more fighting weight when it comes to landing a fish. Easy-going and experienced fly fishermen usually opt for bamboo rods, which are very costly but also very sturdy regardless of the situation.

Nwt also plays a part in determining your choice of fly line – it must match the nwt of your rod. For instance, 8 nwt fly lines would be just right for 8 nwt rods. However, you can go one size over or under (i.e. 9 nwt or 7 nwt for the 8 nwt example above) if you really have no other choice. Buy line that is strong and durable. Some lines are specially designed for freshwater, saltwater, etc.

The next piece of equipment you will need is a sturdy net to hold your catch. Once a fish raises the proverbial white flag, you’ll have to use a net to remove them from the water. Do not overlook this particular piece of fly fishing equipment, because you can’t expect to catch fish and pull them out of the water without a good net!

Having the right fly fishing equipment is important for both the beginner as well as the experienced angler. As you get better and better at the sport, you will begin to see how important having good equipment can be. You can always upgrade, so it’s good to start out small and work your way up to the more expensive stuff. Fly fishing equipment is often the big difference between catching a run-of-the-mill fish and catching a big one that could land you in the papers or on a major sporting network like ESPN2!
